Four Natural Regions

Highlands

Highlands
  • Or Andean region, is known for its majestic snow-capped such as the Chimborazo, Altar and active volcanoes like the Cotopaxi and Tungurahua; which are surrounded for a great vegetation as paramos; humid cloud forests and fertile valleys.
  • Also in the Highlands we can find colorful indigenous markets such as Otavalo, colonial towns as Zuleta, haciendas, cultural cities as Quito, Baños, Riobamba and Artisan centers like Otavalo, Salasaca and Tigua.
  • Also we can visit some national parks with an abundant variety of flora and fauna for example: Cotopaxi National park, Llanganates National Park, Cotacachi Cayapas & Ecological Reserve, Cayambe-Coca, the Ilinizas, Antisana, Chimborazo Wildlife, etc. These places are ideal for trekking, cimbing, camping, etc.

Coast

Coast
  • The climate is warm, with temperatures between 25ºC to 31ºC. In this region is located the Guavas river which is the main river of the coast of the South Pacific.
  • In the coast we can find different ecosystems on the coastline: the tropical rain forest in the north, tropical savannas and cloud forest in the center and southwest, and a dry forest on the peninsula of Sta. Elena. Their main attractions are the beaches such as Puerto Lopez, Canoa, Manta, Salinas, Emeraldas, etc:
  • The sports in the beaches are: Paragliding, Sun and beach, etc.

Rainforest

Rainforest
  • It is known as "Oriente". In this place exists a great biological diversity of plants and animals.
  • Its climate is hot, humid and rainy and the temperature varies between 23 Cº and 26 Cº. The rainforest is the habitat of several indigenous ethnic groups like: Huaorani, Shuar, Ashuar, Kichwa, Siona Sequoia, and Quijos who still conserve: traditions and customs.
  • In the trip to the rainforest we are going to learn many things about indigenous people who keep their ancestral traditions , customs, rituals and the medicinal and local plants.
  • The trips in the jungle are adventure, canoe, trips in raft “canoa” and the expeditions to observe birds and the fauna.
  • The main tourist route is the Napo River, which is a refuge of an extensive variety of birds 

Galapagos Islands

Galapagos
  • Or Archipelago de Colon, located about 1,000 km of the Ecuadorian continental territory, have 13 great islands, 6 small and more than 40 small barren islands “islotes”. Its origin is volcanic.
  • Galapagos was declared by UNESCO World such as Natural Heritage Site in 1978.
  • In this region we can find an abundant biodiversity of flora and fauna.
  • The most popular way to discover the islands is by boat on a Galapagos Cruise, although land-based day tours and scuba diving tours are also offered.
