This volcano, which dominates Quito, is well known for its eruptions. Sometime it fills the sky with ashes. The crater is always in activity: smoke and gas, sulfur deposits and boiling water. Early morning, to take advantage of a wonderful view of Quito, we will arrive at the Pichincha refuge after 2 hours drive. From this point, we will walk in the direction of the crater (1,5 km in diameter and 700m deep) and then to the principal summit. 2 – 4 hours walk. |
